Transistor Radio for the week of February 10-16, 2016
This week on In Store: Selections From Transistor's Live Performance Archive, host Jon Monteverde has an October 2014 set from The Morphtet, a piano-based groove ensemble in trio form. Says the band: "We are a modern barrelhouse group that stomps right into reggae, soul, and stride. We tackle new standards and lay around with old boogie woogie drinking buddies." The trio features the virtuosic talents of Joshua Siegal on keys, Chris Paquette on percussion, and Josh Therriault on saxophone.
Our latest Bring Your Own Beat contribution comes from Terry Tertiary, a musical artist from Chicago who fuses the folk, hip-hop, R&B, electronic, acoustic and indie pop genres to make an original sound. Terry will play Transistor Friday night, February 19, performing seven original songs from his upcoming project, “Folktronica,” in which he will be playing guitar, singing and rapping to backing track instrumentation he programmed. (There is a language advisory on this one.)
Interlopin's DJ Tashtego returns from a long hibernation with a topographically dizzying mix of 2015's best dance jams. The hills of San Francisco got nothin' on this romp through the tranquil thump of Florist, the buoyant soul-splicin' of Sound Stream and Julio Bashmore, the steroidal thwack of Fred Falke and Lifelike, the deep gloomings of Fort Romeau, the spacey flights of Lindstrom and Lauer, and the dark dark dark descents of Hot Chip, Sebastien Bouchet, Edward, and Robag Wruhme. And this is only Part I of the sound of 2015.
Andrea Garces' Gems of the Week are a mix of bass, electronic hip-hop, future funk, and downtempo. This week she has 2016 music from Break Science, Haywyre, An-ten-nae, DEFUNK and BASECAMP.
Stereo Hysteria's theme this week is Stars, with songs by David Bowie, Radiohead, St. Vincent, The Stone Roses, Elliott Smith and more. And on 15 Songs Andy Miles has parts three and four of a series of episodes he's doing this month looking back at the best songs of 2015. This week he's (mostly) focused on alphabetical artists E through J, with music from Holly Herndon, Julia Holter, Lianne La Havas, Ibeyi, Hot Chip, Tobias Jesso, and more.
We hope you'll have a listen!
